LSW Tutors Help Others Help Themselves
Give the gift of literacy by becoming a volunteer tutor at Literacy Services of Wisconsin. With the ability to read and write, our adult students can build better lives for themselves and their families. By fighting illiteracy as an LSW trained tutor, you will experience the greatest satisfaction of all - helping people to help themselves. Tutors work one to one with our adult students in adult basic education, English as a second language and GED exam preparation.
All tutoring is done at the Laubach Literacy Center located at 2724 West Wells Street in Milwaukee. The Center has easy freeway access and offers secure off-street parking. Volunteer tutors are trained by the LSW staff and arrange their own tutoring schedules. Though class is offered throughout a 50-hour, 6-day week, tutors are asked to select a convenient time at which they can regularly tutor. It is hoped that most new tutors can commit to three hours of class per week.
Tutor Qualifications and Training
Prospective tutors must be at least 18 years old and possess a high school diploma or its equivalent. Volunteer tutors attend an hour and a half orientation session and then take a three hour introductory training class. This classroom preparation is followed by in-service training, in which the volunteer joins an experienced tutor in working with a student. The training times are flexible to work around the schedules of potential volunteers. The orientation and training classes are offered on weekdays, weekday evenings and on Saturdays.
